Replacing your Old Hot Water Tank
At Gem Home Services, we supply and install hot water tanks all day, every day. It’s a big part of what we do best.
Firsty, we’ll disconnect and drain the water from your old system. If your tank is situated indoors, we will attach a drain hose to the bottom connection of your old tank and then run the drain hose to the outside of the building. In a home unit, we will drain the tank into a shower or down through a floor waste system.
If your tank is outdoors, we will usually drain the tank by removing the heating element and allowing the water to drain through the opening. In most situations, this is a quick and efficient way to drain a hot water system.
After we drain the tank, we’ll remove it and load it onto our truck so that it can be recycled. Next we’ll clean up the area where the old tank was located, making sure the slab is level and in good condition. In some cases, a new replacement slab is required.
We always use a special “ripple” slab that allows airflow under the tank, preventing moisture from rusting the tanks base.
Even with indoor installations, where the tank is either sitting on the floor, or in a safe tray, we always use plastic grids under our tanks to allow for airflow.
Installing a New Hot Water Tank
Once the tank site is ready, the new tank is placed in position ready to be piped up and hooked up electrically.
Gems’s plumbers always recommend the replacement of your old valves, as they are nearly always as old as the original tank and are either too old to be used or will fail in the not too distant future, causing potential issues with your brand new tank that sometimes might not be covered under the manufacturers warranty.
Also, at Gem Home Services we are commited to installing hot water systems to “Code”, and most old tanks have piping that just does not comply.
Once your new tank is installed to our high standards, it is filled with water and commissioned, where we ensure that all joints are watertight and the tank is drawing electricity (or gas, if it’s a gas unit), and is starting to heat water in the tank.
